The Kane Williamson-led New Zealand team suffered a major upset in the T20 World Cup 2024. New Zealand lost to Afghanistan by 84 runs on Saturday. This is New Zealand’s biggest defeat in terms of runs in the T20 World Cup. Afghanistan’s score at Guyana was 159/6. In reply, New Zealand were bowled out for 75 in 15.2 overs, their fourth lowest total in T20 cricket. Afghanistan captain and star leg-spinner Rasin Khan took four wickets. Fast bowler Fazal Haq Farooqui also got the same number of wickets. New Zealand captain Williamson is reeling from the humiliating defeat. He said Afghanistan beat us in all three departments (batting, bowling, fielding).
Williamson said after the match, “First of all congratulations to the Afghanistan team. He outperformed us in every department. Afghanistan saved their wicket and scored well to reach that score. We have to quickly forget this defeat and focus on our next challenge. The players worked hard for this match but faced difficulties. We need to move on now. Games come quickly in this tournament. Chasing the target of 160 runs was difficult. We needed a partnership. Afghanistan’s spinners have made our way difficult. Our fielding was disappointing, especially in the first 10 overs. We had opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on.
The captain further said, “We need to take steps in the right direction. We know we are better than today’s performance. We have to step up and give ourselves the best chance we can to get into the next match. We didn’t capitalize on our chances and that proved to be very helpful in changing the outcome of the match. Once they scored runs, their bowlers showed their skills well. We will discuss it and then try to make a good comeback in the next match.” Let us tell you that the New Zealand team, which is in Group C, will face the joint hosts West Indies in their second match of the tournament. The match will be played on June 12 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad.
