‘Shaan’ was the most expensive film in India
According to reports, ‘Shaan’ was the most expensive film of that time. The film was made on a budget of Rs 6 crore, almost double the cost of ‘Sholay’. Kamal Amrohi’s film ‘Razia Sultan’ has collected Rs. 7 crores till ‘Shaan’ held the record of the most expensive film for three years. However, ‘Shaan’ failed at the box office after its release. It is said that the film opened well at the box office, but the collections were adversely affected due to negative reviews and bad word of mouth.

Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor’s ‘Shaan’ may have failed at the box office, but the film left a deep impact on Bollywood. Kulbhushan Kharbanda’s character Shakal in the film is among the most popular villains in Hindi cinema. This role got as much popularity as Gabbar Singh got in ‘Sholay’. However, by re-releasing ‘Shaan’ in theatres, the makers earned more than the cost. The film’s final gross collection was Rs 8 crore and the film became a cult classic when it hit TV in the 80s-90s.
