The Afghanistan cricket team has carved a distinct identity for itself at the international level based on its performances over the past few years. Afghanistan, who became a full member of the ICC only in 2017, created history by defeating Bangladesh and qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup for the first time. This achievement showed how much progress Afghanistan have made in the white ball format. In last year’s ODI World Cup, they defeated reigning champions England and former champions Sri Lanka and Pakistan. In the T20 World Cup as well, the team continued its great performance and beat big teams like New Zealand and Australia. However, the Afghanistan team is yet to open a winning account against India and South Africa.

They have to beat these teams if they want to win the T20 World Cup title.

They have won 33 matches and lost 12 matches against Zimbabwe. 14 against Bangladesh, 7 against Sri Lanka, 6 against West Indies, 4 against Pakistan, 1-1 against England, Australia and New Zealand. They have lost 4 matches against South Africa and 12 matches against India.
Afghanistan cricket team played their first ODI match against Scotland in 2009. Afghanistan also played T20 World Cup in 2010. Afghanistan became an associate member of the ICC in 2013 and then gained full membership of the ICC in 2017. However, Afghanistan have not looked back since then and have consistently beaten the big teams. Afghanistan has defeated New Zealand, Australia and Bangladesh in T20 World Cup 2024 being played in America and West Indies.
