New Delhi. Sri Lankan cricket team’s performance in T20 World Cup 2024 was very poor. The team, captained by Wanindu Hasaranga, lost matches against Bangladesh and South Africa in the group stage, while the match against Nepal was washed out due to rain. Confusion continues in the cricket board after the team returned to Sri Lanka. After veteran Mehla Jayawardene, now the head coach has also resigned. Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene was made the team’s batting consultant coach. Silverwood also stepped down as head coach within 12 hours of Jayawardene’s resignation.
On stepping down as head coach Chris Silverwood said, ‘Being an international coach means that after consulting my family, I have decided to return home and spend time with my family. I am proud to be a part of Sri Lankan cricket. I am leaving with many good memories.
Sri Lanka won the T20 Asia Cup under Silverwood’s guidance.
Former England player Chris Silverwood, 49, took over as the head coach of the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2022. Before this, he was the head coach of the England team. During his tenure, he led Sri Lanka to the T20 Asia Cup title, while the following year his team reached the final of the Asia Cup in the 50-over format. However, the Sri Lankan team’s performance in the ODI World Cup held in India last year was disappointing. Among the 10 teams, the Lankan team was ranked 9th. He lost 7 out of 9 matches. The Sri Lankan team could not even reach the Super 8 in the T20 World Cup held in America and West Indies. Sri Lanka had their worst performance in the ICC tournament.
Jayawardhan became batting consultant in 2022
Under the coaching of Chris Silverwood, Sri Lanka won 8 Tests, 26 ODI Internationals and 18 T20 matches. Earlier, Mehla Jayawardhan had left the post of batting consultant on Wednesday. Jayawardene was posted on the post for one year in 2022 but was later extended by one year by Sri Lanka Cricket.
