Barry John was born in 1944 in Warwickshire (now in the West Midlands), England. His father was an engineer who joined the Navy during World War II. Barry John started earning at the age of 12 by selling newspapers in the mornings and doing theater in the evenings.

Barry John was working in a factory at the age of 15. After completing his schooling, he moved to London and joined the University of Leeds, where he trained as a theater teacher for 3 years. Barry John was deeply influenced by India and its culture. He arrived in Delhi in 1970 and worked as a freelance teacher in schools and colleges and joined the Yatrika Theater Group.

Barry John formed several acting groups

Barry John founded the Theater Action Group (TAG) in 1973 along with Siddharth Basu, Roshan Seth, Lillet Dubey, Meera Nair, Ravi Dubey, Manohar Singh, Khalid Tayabji, Pamela Roux, Surekha Sikri and Pankaj Kapoor. Then in 1977, he joined the faculty of the National School of Drama and later became the founder-director of NSD’s Theater in Education Company (TIE) in 1989.
