UGC NET: Last date for UGC NET application extended, these graduate students are also eligible, will get admission in Ph.D.

The last date to apply for UGC NET has been extended to May 15. Earlier last date to apply was 10 May 2024. According to the new schedule, the exam fee can be deposited till May 16. The window for amendment of the application form will open from May 18 to May 20, 2024. The UGC NET exam will be held on June 18, 2024. Earlier the exam was scheduled to be held on June 16. The exam will be conducted in pen paper mode in 83 subjects. Let us tell you that the UGC NET exam for Junior Professor Fellowship and Assistant Professor is conducted twice a year in universities and other higher education institutions across the country.

With UGC NET score one can take admission in Ph.D
The UGC NET 2024 score can be used for admission to PhD degree courses in lieu of entrance exams conducted by various universities and higher educational institutions.

Students will be divided into these three categories based on their performance in the UGC NET exam. UGC NET students will be eligible in following 3 categories-
Category 1 will include those candidates who are eligible for all three, PhD, admission to JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor.
Category 2 will be candidates who are eligible for admission to Ph.D. and appointment as Assistant Professors.
Candidates falling in category 3 will be eligible for admission only to Ph.D.
For PhD admission, NET scores obtained by candidates in category 2 and 3 will be valid for a period of one year.

UGC will give NET for Ph.D to those who have completed 4 years of graduation
Students of the final year of four-year graduation can now also appear for the National Eligibility Test i.e. NET. Candidates with a four-year bachelor’s degree program are allowed to appear in the subject in which they wish to pursue a PhD, regardless of the subject in which they obtained a four-year bachelor’s degree.

Students with a four-year undergraduate degree can now directly take the National Eligibility Test (NET) as well as Ph.D. Candidates for pursuing PhD with or without Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) will be required to secure a minimum of 75% marks or equivalent grade in their four-year undergraduate course. Till now, NET required a candidate to have a postgraduate degree with at least 55 percent marks. Candidates with a four-year undergraduate degree can now directly pursue PhD and take the NET exam. Such candidates will be permitted to pursue PhD in any subject they wish to pursue, irrespective of the subject in which they have obtained a four-year undergraduate degree. Candidates pursuing a four-year or eight-semester undergraduate degree program must have secured at least 75 percent marks or its equivalent grade in aggregate. Relaxation of five percent marks for candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), Handicapped, Economically Weaker Section and equivalent grade as determined by UGC from time to time.

Minimum passing marks
Insecure category – 40 percent
Reserved category – 35 percent

In UGC NET, candidates have to clear each paper separately. In Paper 1, candidates from unreserved category have to secure 40 marks out of 100, while candidates from reserved category have to secure 35 marks out of 100. In Paper 2, unreserved candidates will have to secure 70-75 marks out of 200 while the minimum marks for OBC and EWS category candidates will be 65 to 70. It is 60 to 65 for SC and 55 to 60 for ST.

Application Fee: For Unsecured or General Category Rs. 1150. EWS, OBC NCL candidates have to pay Rs 600, while SC, ST and PwD candidates have to deposit only Rs 325.
