Washington: US intelligence agencies have issued warnings to its domestic space industry about the threat of espionage and satellite attacks from China, Russia and other rivals. A report says that companies connected to America’s space exploration are under threat from adversaries. They can target supply nodes and other technologies through satellite attacks to gain ‘strategic investments (including joint ventures and acquisitions), access to the space industry’.

This warning was given in a bulletin issued jointly by the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Air Force on Friday, Bloomberg reported. The bulletin states that ‘such foreign intelligence operations threaten to disrupt and undermine company secrets as well as US satellite communications, remote sensing and imaging capabilities.’

According to the report, both the US economy and national security are increasingly dependent on space after recent attacks on satellites and growing recognition. The alert recommends setting up an insider threat program to detect anomalies as well as detect spies, and be wary of solicitations and conferences and online outreach from foreign organizations.

However, China and Russia have historically denied allegations that they have engaged in hacking and other attempts to infiltrate or disrupt space systems. A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington said the country always pursues the peaceful exploration of outer space and believes it should be used for the benefit of all humanity. The Russian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Let us tell you that big satellite companies with existing links with the government have also been targeted. Viasat suffered a 2022 cyber attack before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which caused the company to replace 45,000 modems across Europe and beyond. Starlink – part of Space Exploration Technologies Corp, better known as SpaceX – has said it has faced jamming attacks as part of its effort to provide service to Ukraine.
