USA star batsman Aaron Jones on Sunday broke the 17-year-old record of South African cricketer Herschel Gibbs. Aaron Jones’ unbeaten innings of 94 helped co-hosts USA beat Canada by seven wickets in a Group A match to get their T20 World Cup campaign off to a flying start. Jones played a quick innings of 94 runs off 40 balls and was instrumental in helping the team achieve the target of 195 runs in 17.4 overs. Jones hit four fours and 10 sixes in his innings. With this, he has become the highest run-scorer in a World Cup opener while chasing runs. He broke the record of South African legend Herschel Gibbs.

Batting first, Canada scored 194 runs for 5 wickets. In reply, America scored 197 runs for three wickets in 17.4 overs with the help of Andrew Gauss’ 65 runs and Jones’ 40-ball innings. Jones hit 10 sixes and 4 fours in his storming innings. Herschel Gibbs scored 90 off 55 balls against West Indies in the first T20 World Cup match played in Johannesburg on 11 September 2007. In this match, he played an important role in helping the team to achieve the target of 206 runs against West Indies.

The record for most runs in the first match of the T20 World Cup is held by Chris Gayle, who scored 117 runs off 57 balls in the first innings of the same match. Jones’ 94 runs is now behind Gayle’s 117 runs on the all-time list. Navneet Dhaliwal (61) and Aaron Johnson (31) gave Canada an aggressive start. After this, Nicholas Kirton made a challenging score of 51 runs off 31 balls.

However, America did not face any difficulty in reaching the target. Aaron Jones, who played an unbeaten innings of 94 runs, scored the fastest half-century in the history of US T20 cricket against Canada. He completed 50 runs in just 22 balls.
