West Bengal assault case: NHRC takes cognizance, seeks reply from Chief Secretary, DGP

New Delhi:

The National Human Rights Commission has taken serious note of the lynching of a couple in West Bengal’s North Dinajpur. A man and a woman were publicly beaten up by people allegedly belonging to a political party in North Dinajpur. A statement issued by the commission said that the state authorities have neither learned any lessons from such incidents in the past nor from the concerns raised by the NHRC. Also, the NHRC has issued notices to West Bengal Chief Secretary and Director General of Police and sought a detailed report within a week.

NHRC in its statement said that considering the seriousness of the matter, it has decided to send its team to the spot for further investigation. For this, the Commission has asked its Director General (Investigation) to immediately constitute a team headed by an officer, who should not be below the rank of Senior Superintendent of Police. The commission has also been asked to visit the spot and submit a report soon.

The case is from Chopra division of North Dinajpur.

The NHRC, citing video from media reports, said a woman and a man were brutally beaten up in public by people allegedly belonging to a political ideology in Lakshmipur village of Chopra division in North Dinajpur district.

The accused are associated with the ruling party

According to media reports, angry villagers discussed the allegations of an affair between the victimized couple in the panchayat. It is alleged that the miscreants then started beating the duo. The main accused is allegedly associated with a ruling political party in West Bengal and can be seen in the viral video severely beating the couple surrounded by a mob.

The commission said in a statement that if the news is true, it raises a serious issue of violation of the couple’s human rights.
