BJP MP Om Birla has been elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. After this Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also congratulated him. Later, the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition escorted Om Birla to the Lok Sabha Speaker’s seat, after which PM Modi and the Leader of the Opposition congratulated him on his election as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Along with him, other leaders also congratulated him. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav were also seen taunting.
Congratulating Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Rahul Gandhi said that the government has political power, but this time the opposition is presenting the voice of the country. The voice of the people will give you a chance.
Rahul Gandhi hinted at suspending more than 150 MPs from Parliament over security issues in the 17th Lok Sabha, saying that it is not important that the House runs properly but how much India’s voice is heard, the Leader of the Opposition said.
Rahul Gandhi said that in this election people have shown that the opposition should protect the constitution, I am confident that you will go ahead by giving the opposition a chance to speak, giving a chance to raise the voice of the people of India. Do your duty to protect the Constitution.
Congratulating Samajwadi Party chief and MP from Kannauj Akhilesh Yadav and Om Birla, he said, Prime Minister and our fellow opposition leaders have congratulated you. You have five years of house running experience. We all believe that we will proceed without discrimination and as Speaker of the Lok Sabha we will respect every MP and every party. Fairness is a major responsibility of this great position.
He said, “You are sitting as the chief justice of democratic justice. We all expect from you that the voice of no people’s representative should not be suppressed and no action should be taken to oust the dignity of the House once again.” You control the opposition, but you also control the ruling party.
Reminded of the suspension of MPs
Akhilesh further said that the House should follow your directions, not vice versa. We stand by your every righteous decision. I am in this new house for the first time. I felt that the speaker’s chair was too high, the chair in the house I left was also high, the stonework in the new house was well laid, everything looked good. But cement is still visible in some cracks. I hope you give as much opportunity to the opposition as you give to the ruling party.
By saying this, Akhilesh Yadav was reminding the Lok Sabha Speaker of his dignity and duty. The opposition has continuously accused Om Birla of discrimination during his previous tenure. He alleged that the voice of opposition MPs was suppressed at the behest of Om Birla. The Congress once accused him of turning off the mic during Rahul Gandhi’s speech. He was also criticized for suspending more than 90 MPs from the Lok Sabha.
