After Chennai Super Kings (CSK) exited from the playoffs of IPL 2024, speculations about veteran wicketkeeper batsman MS Dhoni’s retirement have gained momentum. CSK lost their league match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 27 runs. RCB became the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs. Former CSK batsman Ambati Rayudu has made a big statement regarding Dhoni’s IPL retirement. Rayudu says whether Dhoni will play next year or not, the ball is now in the court of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Dhoni handed over the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad before the start of the current season.

“He looked very disappointed when he got out,” Rayudu told a Star Sports programme. This was not Dhoni’s style. This should not be his last season. They should play next season and win IPL. He will want to end his career on top. Players like him come once in a generation.” Rayudu also hoped that keeping the dominant player rule intact would make it easier for Dhoni to remain part of the team. As per the Impact Player Rules an Impact Player may substitute any member of the playing XI at any time during the game.

The former batsman said, “You can’t predict anything about Dhoni. It may come back again next year. He may get a chance to bat in the last few overs due to the impact player rule. BCCI should maintain this rule because we want to see Dhoni playing. Now the ball is in BCCI’s court whether we will see Dhoni playing or not, let us tell you that Dhoni scored 161 runs at an average of 53.67 and a strike rate of 220.55 in IPL 2024. He came to bat in the lower order and remained unbeaten on eight occasions. He scored 25 off 13 balls against RCB. As long as Dhoni was at the crease, the RCB camp was holding its breath.
