This once again reminds us of the time when BCCI did not have money to pay the players. In 1983, a concert had to be organized to reward Kapil Dev’s warriors. It may be noted that BCCCI Secretary Jai Shah has announced a prize money of Rs 125 crore for Indian players.

The year 1983 is known. Team India reached India as world champion. BCCI did not have enough money to reward players and support staff. NKP Salve was the then president of BCCI. He was very keen to reward the players for this historic achievement, but lack of money was getting in the way. After this BCCI sought help from Lata Mangeshkar. Lata was asked to perform the concert. The money that comes after this will be given to the players. Lata Mangeshkar gave a concert in New Delhi. Meanwhile, world champion cricketers were also present there. A total of 20 lakh rupees was collected. Each player was awarded a prize of Rs 1 lakh.

Not only this, in those days the players received a measly amount as match fee. 1983 World Cup Meanwhile, each player was given 2100 rupees. Out of which Rs 1500 was match fee and Rs 600 daily allowance. The situation was such that players used to wash their own clothes to save match fee money. Kapil Dev narrated an incident. According to this, the players were partying after winning the World Cup. Bottles of wine and champagne were being opened in a restaurant. By then the players’ money was also spent. In such a situation, Captain Kapil was worried who would pay the bill for all this. However, Kapil said till date the mystery of who paid the bill at that time has not been revealed.
