Ricky Ponting is the head coach of Delhi Capitals in the IPL Ponting said he was approached to coach

New Delhi. Former Australian batsman Ricky Ponting has revealed that he was approached for the post of head coach of the Indian team. But he rejected this offer. Ponting said it doesn’t fit into his ‘lifestyle’ at the moment. Ponting, who recently completed 7 seasons as head coach of Delhi Capitals, was previously Australia’s interim T20 coach. He did not say whether there was any suggestion from the BCCI for the post of Indian coach.

Ricky Ponting told the ICC, ‘There were some face-to-face conversations during the IPL to see if I was interested in the post or not. I would love to be a senior coach of the national team. I have other things in my life and I want to spend some time at home. Everyone knows that if you work with the Indian team, you cannot join the IPL team. Also being a national head coach is a 10 or 11 month job a year, and as much as I want to do it, it doesn’t fit into my lifestyle and the things I really love to do.

‘Son is ready to come to India’
Ponting said he discussed the proposal with his son and he seemed ready to come to India. He said, ‘My family and my children have spent the last five weeks with me at the IPL and they come here every year and I told my son about it. I said, ‘Papa has been offered the job as Indian coach’ and he said, ‘Just accept it, Papa, we’d love to go there for the next few years.’ How much he loves living there and the culture of cricket in India. It probably doesn’t quite fit into my lifestyle right now.

Langer, Fleming and Gambhir are also in the race
Some other high profile names like Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming, Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer and Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir are also being looked at as possible candidates. Rahul Dravid will step down as head coach after India’s T20 World Cup campaign next month. BCCI has fixed May 27 as the last date for submission of applications.
