A report surfaced before the end of the T20 World Cup 2024 league stage that said two Indian players – Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan – would leave the team and return home before the Super-8. Both were part of the reserve players. However, this was followed by another report which claimed that Gill was being sent home due to indiscipline and also had a falling out with Rohit Sharma. Both the players have also unfollowed each other on Instagram. But now putting a full stop to all these reports, Indian batting coach Vikram Rathore has given a statement that the decision to return home of the two Indian players was taken before the start of the tournament.

“This was the plan from the beginning. When we come to America, four (reserve) players will come with us. After that, two will go back home. And two will go with us to the West Indies,” Vikram Rathore told a press conference after the cancellation of the India-Canada match. So, this was the plan since the team was selected so we are following it.”

Apart from the 15-man squad, BCCI selected 4 reserve players for the T20 World Cup. Besides Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan, Rinku Singh and Khalil Ahmed were the reserve players. Rinku and Khalil will now leave for the West Indies with Team India for the Super-8, while Gill-Avesh will return home.

Rathore further said, “Some reserve players are being released. Of course, this is always a concern when you play in conditions that are not ideal. So, the decision to play or not to play is left to the match officials. So in the team We had no say, but it would have really helped us. We were keen to play a good game of cricket.”

“When you play in such conditions, there is always a concern that some injury might happen. You are already in the Super 8s and you don’t want that to happen,” said the batting coach.
