With Gautam Gambhir becoming the head coach of the Indian team, the international career of IPL champion captain Shreyas Iyer could get a new lease of life, making his comeback through the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in July-August. Shreyas, who leads Kolkata Knight Riders, may also be picked for the five-match T20 series against Zimbabwe from July 5 but is more likely to be selected for the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Gambhir, a strong contender for the post of head coach of the Indian cricket team, was KKR’s mentor in the IPL. Shreyas was dropped from the BCCI’s central contract along with Ishan Kishan as he was reluctant to play in the Ranji Trophy. Shreyas scored 90 runs in the Ranji final. The squad for the five-match T20 series against Zimbabwe will be announced next week. Many young players who have performed well in the IPL are currently in the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
A BCCI source said, “Shreyas is currently not in the NCA. Most of the cricketers in NCA are those who can play well in IPL and they include Abhishek Sharma, Ryan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana, Nitish Reddy, Vijaykumar Vishakh, Yash Dayal. “There is a possibility that Shreyas may go to Sri Lanka for the three-match ODI series. they World Cup Scored over 500 runs and averaged close to 50. How can we throw them away?
It is believed that senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah will now focus on ODIs and Tests as nine WTC Tests are scheduled to be played between September 2024 and January 2025. These include two Tests in India against Bangladesh and New Zealand, five Tests in Australia and the ODI Champions Trophy in Pakistan. The Zimbabwe team will have IPL stars like Rinku Singh, Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan, Khalil Ahmed. If Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are not rested, they could become captain and vice-captain, though both have been playing consistently since the start of the IPL.
