Indian team great batsman Sachin Tendulkar has praised Rohit and Virat Kohli. India’s most experienced batsman retired from the shortest format of the game after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 title match against South Africa on Saturday. Virat Kohli announced his retirement after the match ended while Rohit Sharma announced his retirement during a press conference. Sachin Tendulkar said that he has watched Rohit’s career very closely. He has described Virat Kohli as one of the greatest players of the gentleman’s game.
Sachin Tendulkar tweeted, “I have closely watched your (Rohit Sharma) journey from being a promising young player to becoming a World Cup winning captain. Your unwavering commitment and exceptional talent have made the country very proud. Leading the team in the T20 World Cup title battle is the best end to your illustrious career. Well done, Rohit!”
Sachin Tendulkar wrote for Virat Kohli, “You are the real champion of this game.” You faced some difficulties early in the tournament but last night you proved that you are truly one of the greats of the gentleman’s game. Participating in 6 World Cups and winning the final World Cup is an experience I know well. Hope you keep winning matches for India in the longer format of the game.
Rohit was also the captain in the 2022 T20 World Cup when India beat England in the semi-finals. A year later, in the 50-over World Cup, the Indian team captained by Rohit lost to Australia in the final. Rohit played 159 matches in T20 cricket and scored 4231 runs including five centuries and 32 fifties. He will continue to play Tests and ODIs. Kohli has scored 4188 runs for India in 125 T20 matches at an average of 48.69. He scored his only century against Afghanistan in September 2022.
