Mumbai. Novelist Saratchandra Chattopadhyay has left an indelible mark on Bengali language literature. Born on 15 September 1876, the pen of this son of the Bengali language captured the contemporary times in the pages of books. But Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s pen produced a novel that transcended the cycle of time. The name of this novel is ‘Devdas’. Saratchandra Chattopadhyay wrote this novel in the year 1901, but it was published in the year 1917. The novel is like a holy book for cinema.

So far 15 films have been made on the story of this novel. Once a film based on this novel created a storm at the box office by earning 100 crores. Even after 122 years people still remember Devdas characters well. Not only that, Devdas characters have been loved by 4 generations. When these characters appeared on screen, people clapped and whistled every time. Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali made the most expensive film in the history of cinema in 2002. The film was ruling the box office.

For the brothel scene in the film, a grand brothel was prepared at a cost of 12 crore rupees. Madhuri Dixit danced wearing a 30 kg lehenga during her songs and created quite a stir.
