On Saturday, a commercial ship carrying 21 Indian crew members was attacked by a drone about 217 nautical miles from Porbandar, following which the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard deployed several ships to provide assistance to the vessel.
The ship reached Mumbai shore at 3.30 pm. Indian Coast Guard ship ICGS Vikram provided security to them en route to Mumbai.
“Upon arrival of the vessel, the Indian Navy’s Anti-Explosive Ordnance Team inspected the vessel to make a preliminary assessment of the type and nature of the attack,” a Navy spokesperson said. Examination of the area of the attack and debris found on the ship suggest that it was a drone attack.
“However, forensic and technical analysis will be required to determine the nature of the attack and the quantity of explosives used,” he said.
After the anti-explosive ordnance team completed the analysis of the vessel, various agencies launched a joint investigation, the spokesperson said.
The official said three guided missile destroyers have been deployed in the area in view of increasing attacks on commercial ships in the Arabian Sea.
