A songwriter who gave a single great song broke because of one thing, became so anonymous that he died.

The lyricist we are talking about here is Varma Malik. After entering the film world, he changed his name to Verma Malik. His real name was Barkat Rai Malik and he was born on 13 April 1925. Verma Malik participated in the Indian freedom movement and instilled a sense of patriotism in the people through his songs and for this he went to jail several times. After independence, he decided to make writing his career and music director Hans Raj Bahl helped him in this task.

Be it sarcastic or heart touching songs, Verma Malik has sung them. He wrote them all very well and many of his songs are still on people’s lips today. Songs like ‘Chalo Re Doli Udhao’ or ‘Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai’ are played even today. Verma Malik’s songs created a lot of buzz in Bollywood but he was deeply saddened when his wife died of old age.
