In the clip, Seattle Police Officers Guild Vice President Daniel Oderer can be heard saying “she’s dead” and then laughing in a call with the guild president. He added with a laugh, “Yeah, just write a check, eleven thousand dollars.” The Seattle Community Police Commission (CPC) released a statement Monday after the video was released, calling the conversation between the orderer and his colleague “heartbreaking and shockingly insensitive.”

“The people of Seattle deserve better from a police department charged with building trust with the community and ensuring public safety,” the CPC said. Meanwhile, the Seattle Police Department, which released the video “in the interest of transparency,” said He would not comment on the matter until the Police Accountability Office completes its investigation into the incident. It may be mentioned that Kandula, a native of Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district, died after being hit by a Seattle Police patrol vehicle in South Lake Union.

The Seattle Police Department said in a statement that an officer driving a patrol SUV was traveling north on Dexter Avenue North when he responded to an emergency call to the Seattle Fire Department. According to the statement, the woman was walking east to west in the pedestrian crosswalk when she was struck by the vehicle. Initially, the orderly reported that the officer was driving his car at 50 MPH and was not “out of control.” However, a police investigation later revealed that the car was traveling at a speed of 74 MPH when it collided with Kandula.

According to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, the cause of death was multiple injuries. Janhvi Kandula was a student at Northeastern University’s campus in South Lake Union and was set to receive a master’s degree in information systems this December.
