Houston: At least six people of an Indian-origin family, including two children, have died in a horrific road accident in Texas, USA. The officials gave this information. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said a van and truck collided head-on Tuesday evening near Johnson County.
Seven people from the same family from Andhra Pradesh’s Amlapuram city were traveling in the van and only one person, Lokesh Potabathula (43), survived, the official said. He is seriously injured. DPS identified the van driver Wednesday as Rushiel Berry, 28, of Irving. He identified the other dead as Lokesh’s wife Navina Potabathula (36), his children Karthik Potabathula (10) and Nishidha Potabathula (9) and parents Nageshwarrao Ponada (64), Seethamalakshmi Ponada (60).
The Consulate General of India said the elderly man had come from India to meet his daughter Navina and grandsons Karthik and Nishidha. According to the Indian mission, the couple was working for TCS on L1 visas and those killed in the accident were Mummideevaram MLA P. Venkat was a relative of Satish Kumar. DPS investigators said the truck was traveling southbound on Highway 67 near County Road 1119, while the van was traveling northbound in the same area. The truck then veered into the northbound lane and collided with the minivan.
DPS said the elderly couple and their two children were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. He said two 17-year-old boys traveling in the truck also suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized in Fort Worth. Highway 67 was closed for several hours after the incident, but was later reopened to traffic, the official said. DPS thanked the Indian Consulate, Indian Association of North Texas, Georgia State Police and the Johns Creek Police Department for their assistance in locating next of kin.
