Prague:
The Czech Republic saw its worst mass shooting in decades, with a 24-year-old gunman killing more than 15 people and wounding dozens at Prague University on Thursday. The attacker was also killed in the retaliatory action, officials said. The city was evacuated after the deadly violence in the city centre…Heavily armed police responded massively and people were warned to stay indoors.

AFP reports According to the Times of India, the librarianship took place at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts, which is located near major tourist attractions such as the 14th-century Charles Bridge. “More than 15 people have lost their lives and at least 24 have been injured,” Police Chief Martin Vondracek told media after the shooting. Vondracek said the search for the man began before the shooting at the university, as his father was found dead in the village of Hošton, west of Prague. The attacker was identified as a university student.
The police reached the university to find the accused.
“The gunman left for Prague saying he wanted to kill himself,” Vondracek said. The police suspect that the gunman killed his father. So police searched the main arts faculty building, where the gunman was supposed to attend a lecture, but went to another nearby faculty building and couldn’t find him.
Action taken in 12 minutes
“We received the first information of the shooting at 1359 GMT. The Rapid Action Unit was on the scene within 12 minutes. Then at 1420 GMT, responding officers informed us that the gunman had been killed,” Vondracek told media. However, unconfirmed information suggests that the gunman committed suicide.
Citing an investigation of the suspect’s social media accounts, Vondracek said the gunman was inspired by a “similar case that happened this fall in Russia,” though he did not elaborate on any such case. “At this time, there is nothing to indicate any more imminent danger,” he said. Vondracek said no police officers were injured in Thursday’s operation.
