Washington: US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Tuesday that he is directing a House committee to open an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden over his family’s business dealings. This historic action is being considered very important ahead of the 2024 presidential elections.
McCarthy claimed that the House Oversight Committee’s investigation so far has found a “culture of corruption” surrounding the Biden family. The case is related to the business deals of Hunter Biden, the president’s son. “These are allegations of abuse of power and corruption that require further investigation by the House of Representatives,” McCarthy said outside the speaker’s office. “So today I’m directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden,” he said.
The US Constitution gives Congress the power to impeach federal officials, including the President, for treason, bribery, and other high crimes and misdemeanors. The President can be removed from office if the House approves the articles of impeachment by a simple majority.

Trump is the only US President who has been impeached twice. After a trial in the Senate, he was acquitted both times due to the votes of his fellow Republicans. The first impeachment was conducted in 2019. In which Trump was accused of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He was impeached for the second time in 2021. This was at a time when Trump’s supporters were accused of inciting rebellion after the attack on the US Capitol.
