The Bihar Education Department has cut the salaries of 12,987 teachers found absent on duty in the last six months during the inspection of schools. A senior official gave this information on Friday.

The department has suspended another 39 teachers for violating various education rules in the last six months, while 13 teachers have been suspended for periods ranging from six months to two years for allegedly being absent on duty without permission and violating teacher recruitment rules. “In the last six months (till December 23), the department has seen 12,987 people (within a period of six months to two years) absent from duty without the permission of the competent authority,” said a department official, requesting anonymity. Salaries of teachers have been cut.” He said, “recommendations have been made to cut the salaries of 131 other teachers as well.

Besides, 13 teachers have also been dismissed in the last six months for alleged violation of the provisions of the Bihar School Teacher Recruitment Rules. The recent circular issued by the state education department on teachers is facing criticism.

The Bihar Raj Bhavan on December 26 sent a formal message to the state chief secretary asking him to immediately implement ‘corrective measures’ against the ‘unconstitutional’ and ‘arbitrary’ order recently passed by the higher education wing of the education department. Expressing his opinion, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar said that the passing of such orders by the department is deteriorating the educational environment in the state.

Both allies of the grand coalition government in Bihar as well as the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have demanded immediate withdrawal of the circular. The state education department has taken many drastic measures to improve the quality of education in the state.
