Death of Bishan Singh Bedi: Amidst World Cup 2023, bad news is coming for Indian cricket fans. Former Team India captain and veteran spinner Bishan Singh Bedi passed away on Monday. He was 77 years old. Bedi had been ill for the past two years and had undergone several surgeries, including one on his knee, about a month ago. The great spinner played 67 Tests for India between 1967 and 1979 and took 266 wickets. He also took seven wickets in 10 ODIs. Bedi was part of India’s famous spin quartet which also included Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar and S Venkataraghavan. He was instrumental in India’s first ODI win. His excellent bowling figures of 12-8-6-1 restricted East Africa to 120 in the 1975 World Cup match.

Bishan Singh Bedi played his first match for India on 31 December 1966 at the historic Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. He played his first Test against West Indies. He started his ODI career in 1974 against England.
Bishan Singh Bedi was born in 1946 in Amritsar. He proved his mettle while playing for Delhi in the domestic circuit. With 1,560 wickets in 370 matches, he was the highest wicket-taker for India in first-class cricket.

Bedi also led Delhi to its first two Ranji Trophy titles in 1978–79 and 1979–80. During his tenure, the team was also runner-up twice. Coincidentally, under his leadership, the team played four finals in a span of five years.
