The British government on Friday announced a joint investment plan of 1.25 billion pounds in Tata Steel’s steel plant in Wales, saying the government would fund 500 million pounds. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak “This investment will modernize Britain’s steel industry and ensure a more stable future,” it said in a statement released on social media platform X. Moreover, it will protect the employment of thousands of skilled workers in the long run and help grow the economy.
Number of Employees: Located in Port Talbot, South Wales, the steel factory employs more than 8,000 people. Apart from this, about 12,500 people also work in supply chain related activities. According to the British government’s Department of Business and Trade, the proposal has the potential to protect more than 5,000 jobs.
What Tata Steel said
Detailing the investment proposal in a statement, Tata Steel said the new electric furnace will replace existing coal-fired furnaces at the factory, which is expected to reduce the country’s total carbon emissions by around 1.5 percent.
