Ottawa. In 2019, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a pro-Khalistan group banned in India, has threatened Hindus living in Canada amid an ongoing diplomatic row over the killing of Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar and asked them to support India. Leave the country. In a video going viral on the Internet, SFJ militant Gurpatwant Singh Pannu is seen calling on Canadian Sikhs to vote for the so-called plebiscite on October 29 in Vancouver.

Pannu, declared a terrorist in India, said, ‘India-Hindu… Leave Canada, go to India.’ He claimed that pro-Khalistan Sikhs have always been loyal to Canada and have always sided with Canada. This video has surfaced two days after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claim.

Let us tell you that Justin Trudeau claimed in June that there was a ‘possible connection’ between Indian government agents and the killing of Nijjar. Senior diplomats from both countries faced expulsion due to these serious allegations. In a strongly worded statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rejected his claim as ‘absurd and motivated’.

The Ministry of External Affairs said, ‘Such baseless allegations seek to divert attention from Khalistani militants and extremists, who have been granted sanctuary in Canada and who continue to pose a threat to India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The inaction of the Canadian government on this issue has been a long-standing and continuing concern. The diplomatic tension between the two countries comes against the backdrop of New Delhi’s growing concern over growing anti-India activities in Canada. This includes the ‘open’ support of political figures to Khalistani leaders.

India’s intelligence agencies on Wednesday expressed concern over pro-Khalistan outfits (PKE) and growing political support for them in Canada and warned of ‘aggressive and intense’ activities against Indians and officials. Agencies said Khalistan supporters could target temples, Indians living in Canada and Indian entrepreneurs doing business there. The agencies said that information about an encounter between the PKE and the Indians could be received in the coming days.

Canadian minister of Hindu origin Anita Anand has appealed for peace. In a post on X, she said families in South Asians and India, regardless of religion, will share the sentiment that Trudeau’s statement on Monday was hard to hear. He further said, ‘It is time to continue the legal process as it should be continued. Let us all be calm, united and emotional.
