The BCCI announced the Indian squad for India’s tour of South Africa on Thursday (November 30). Senior Indian players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will not play in the ODI and T20 series, having sought a break from the BCCI, while both will make a comeback in the Test series. Under the captaincy of Rohit, the Indian team won ten consecutive matches and reached the final of the World Cup, where they were defeated by Australia by six wickets. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Sourav Ganguly called Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli an integral part of Indian cricket.

Rohit and Virat Kohli have taken a break from the limited overs series in South Africa from December 10. Ganguly told reporters that both needed rest to keep them fresh for the hectic schedule ahead.

“You saw how he played in the World Cup,” he said. They are an integral part of Indian cricket.” Rohit and Virat have not played T20 cricket since the 2022 T20 World Cup. Since then Hardik Pandya has been India’s T20 captain but due to his injury, Suryakumar Yadav is captaining against Australia.

Ganguly said, “The World Cup is different from a bilateral series because the pressure is different. India performed brilliantly in this World Cup and will repeat it in West Indies after six-seven months. Rohit is a leader and I hope he will captain in the T20 World Cup as well.

Impressed by Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in the ODI World Cup, former captain Sourav Ganguly on Friday said he should remain India’s captain at least till next year’s T20 World Cup. “Rohit should captain India after his comeback in all formats because he did so well in the World Cup,” he said on the sidelines of a promotional event here.
