Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Jay Shah on Sunday announced a prize money of 50,000 dollars to the entire team of groundsmen who prepared the ground in Colombo and Pallekele for the Asia Cup during the monsoon. “Salute to the unsung heroes of cricket! Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) are proud to announce US$50,000 in prize money for dedicated curators and groundsmen in Colombo and Kandy,” Shah wrote on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).
This amount in Sri Lankan rupees is approximately 1 crore 60 lakh rupees. Shah wrote, “His commitment and hard work Asia Cup 2023 Made it an unforgettable tournament. From the excellence of the pitch to the lush outfield, he ensured that the stage was set for exciting cricketing action.”
He said, “This recognition reflects the important role these individuals have played in the success of cricket. Let us celebrate and honor their services!” The tournament was hosted by Pakistan but India was not keen on playing in the neighboring country and India. In such a situation, the ACC was forced to organize the tournament on a ‘hybrid model’ in which Sri Lanka had to host nine matches.
However, the weather conditions in Sri Lanka posed a challenge especially to the curators and groundsmen as they struggled to prepare the grounds on time. India’s opening match against arch-rivals Pakistan at Pallekele was washed out due to rain while several other matches were decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method.
