Delhi High Court (Delhi High Court) has imposed a cost of Rs 20,000 on the central government for adopting a “lax attitude” in granting pension to the 96-year-old freedom fighter. The High Court said the case showed a “sad situation” as freedom fighter Uttam Lal Singh had to wait from door to door for more than 40 years to get his arrears of pension. Justice Subramaniam Prasad directed the Center to pay freedom fighter honors pension to Singh since 1980 with interest. He directed to pay the amount in 12 weeks.

The high court said, “The insensitivity shown by the Center towards those who fought for the freedom of the country is distressing.”

“For its lenient attitude, this court deems it appropriate to impose a cost of Rs 20,000 on the Government of India,” the court said in its November 2 judgment. The fee should be paid to the applicant within six weeks from today.

The court said that the Bihar government recommended the petitioner’s case and sent the original documents to the central government in March 1985. However, the documents were lost from the central government.

The court was hearing the plea of ​​Singh, who said he was born in 1927 and participated in the Quit India movement and other movements related to the freedom struggle.

The petition states that the British government framed him and declared him a fugitive in September 1943.

The petitioner applied for Independent Soldier’s Honorary Pension in March 1982 and his name was forwarded to the Center by the Government of Bihar in February 1983.
