Ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Australia has received a major setback. Star opener Travis Head is injured. His left hand is fractured. The head injury occurred in the fourth ODI against South Africa on Friday. Doubts are gathering over Head’s performance in the upcoming World Cup. The World Cup is going to start from October 5. Australia’s first match will be against hosts India on October 8.
The 29-year-old Hayden had to return to the pavilion after being hurt in the fourth ODI. He scored 14 runs in 11 balls with 1 four and 1 six. Australia had to face a crushing defeat in this match by 164 runs. South Africa made a huge score of 416/5. The five-match series is currently tied at 2-2. Australia coach Andrew MacDonald said he had a confirmed head fracture but the extent of the injury and how long it would take to recover would be assessed.
It may be noted that the Australian team is troubled these days due to the injury of many players. Skipper Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell have been included in Australia’s 15-man World Cup squad despite injuries. However, all of them are likely to be fit for the ODI series against India before the World Cup.
Cummins and Smith have been struggling with wrist injuries during the Ashes series. While Starc and Maxwell are suffering from groin and ankle injuries. “They will all be fit soon and are expected to be picked for the upcoming series against India,” Australia’s chief selector George Bailey said last week.
