New Delhi. Reigning world champions England’s embarrassing run in the ICC ODI World Cup continues. Their journey in the tournament ended on Saturday 4 November with a loss to Australia. Batting first, the Kangaroo team managed to score 286 runs on the basis of Marnus Labuschenne’s fifty. Once again the English team’s batting disappointed while chasing the target.
The match against Australia was the last chance for England to save themselves from the ICC ODI World Cup being played in India. England won the toss and chose to bowl against Australia. The Kangaroos team did not start well, with openers Travis Head and David Warner flopping. Steve Smith played an innings of 44 runs while Marnus Labusche led the team with an innings of 71 runs. Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis contributed to the team’s 286 in the lower order.
England’s sixth defeat
Chasing down the target of 287 runs given by Australia, the England team was bowled out for 106 runs in 4 overs. Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes took over from here. The duo took the score to 169 runs and Stokes returned with 64 runs. After this, wickets continued to fall and the English team’s hopes of victory faded. Adam Zampa once again wreaked havoc for Australia. Captain Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc also took 2 wickets each.
England are out of the World Cup
England, who won the ICC ODI World Cup title in 2019, were knocked out in the first round of the tournament this time. After playing the first 7 matches, the team managed to achieve only 1 win. Even after winning the remaining two matches, the English team will only be able to save honour. After Bangladesh, England became the second team to be eliminated from the World Cup.
