A court in Varanasi on Friday convicted and sentenced former Muslim MLA Mukhtar Ansari to five-and-a-half years in jail and fined him Rs 10,000 for allegedly threatening Mahavir Prasad Rungta, brother of coal merchant Nandkishore Rungta. This decision was given by Additional Civil Judge Senior Division (First) Ujjwal Upadhyay of the MP-MLA Court (MP-MLA Court).

The victim’s advocate Vidhan Chandra Yadav said that the statement of Mukhtar Ansari was recorded in the court on Thursday in the case of threatening Rungta. According to him, Mukhtar Ansari, lodged in Banda Jail, appeared in the court through video conferencing.
Yadav said that the MP-legislators court had reserved order in the Mukhtar Ansari case on December 5, 2023 and today the court convicted Mukhtar Ansari and sentenced him to five-and-a-half years in jail. The court has also imposed a fine of ten thousand rupees on him. The court said that if Ansari does not pay the fine, he will have to undergo an additional imprisonment of two months.
A senior Lucknow police officer said in a statement that Mukhtar Ansari was given this sentence because of effective lobbying by the police. The statement said Ansari has been convicted in seven cases in the last 15 months.
The present case was registered by Mahavir Prasad Rungta, a resident of Jawahar Nagar, in 1997 at Bhelupur Police Station in Varanasi district. He accused Mukhtar Ansari of threatening him.
Mukhtar Ansari, imprisoned in Banda Jail, was elected as an MLA from Mau Sadar assembly seat of Mau district for five consecutive times from 1996 to 2017 and Ansari’s son Abbas Ansari contested from this seat on Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party ticket in 2022 assembly elections. Subhashpa) won.
