Former Pakistan wicketkeeper batsman Moin Khan has said that there was a lack of unity among Pakistan players during the Asia Cup 2023. In the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2023, the Pakistan team was eliminated from the tournament after losing their two matches. Pakistan team was said to be the strong contender to win the title but the team suffered a major blow due to injuries to its two fast bowlers Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf. The team could not get out of it.
Pakistan’s performance in Asia Cup 2023 has been very poor. Pakistan had to face defeat against Sri Lanka in the last match of Super 4. Due to this defeat, the team had to be eliminated from the tournament. The performance of Pakistan’s middle order and middle overs in the tournament has been under question marks. The two main spinners of the team, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz, took only two wickets during the four matches. Shadab Khan gave 218 runs in 35 overs.
Entering the tournament as the number one ODI team, Pakistan finished last in the table at the Super 4 stage. After the defeat against Sri Lanka, there were reports of differences between the players in Pakistan’s dressing room. According to the report, there was a brawl between Shaheen Afridi and Babar Azam. Former wicketkeeper-batsman Moin Khan during an interview on Geo TV said that the team lacks unity and Babar Azam is left alone.
“We saw that throughout the tournament,” he said. As I commented on this earlier, no player went to Babar. Neither Rizwan nor vice captain Shadab Khan were going near him. No one was going near them. It felt like everything was scattered, no unity was visible.”
Pakistan currently do not have any official 50-over matches before the start of the World Cup. They have two practice matches against New Zealand (29 September) and Australia (03 October) but both matches do not have official ODI status.
