Consideration of Evacuation of Al Shifa Hospital
Earlier this week, after the Israeli attack, WHO and other UN officials visited Al Shifa Hospital, after which they appealed for its evacuation. A Hamas health official said more than 80 people were killed Saturday in two attacks on a northern Gaza refugee camp, including a United Nations school hosting displaced people.
A social media video verified by news agency AFP shows blood-stained bodies on the floor of a building in Jabalia, the largest refugee camp in the Palestinian territory, where mattresses were placed under school desks. Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN agency UNRWA, described the incident as “horrific images”, while Egypt described the bombing as a “war crime” and a “deliberate insult to the United Nations”. A separate attack on another building in the Jabalia camp on Saturday killed 32 people from a single family, including 19 children, Hamas health officials said. Without specifying the attack, the Israeli military said the “incident in the Jabalia “area” was being reviewed.
Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital is in focus these days
Israel vowed to eliminate Hamas in response to the October 7 attack. Hamas attacks have killed 1,200 people in Israel, while retaliation has so far killed 12,300 people in Gaza, including 5,000 children. Gaza’s largest hospital, Al-Shifa, has been a major focus in recent days. Israeli forces have alleged that Hamas uses it as a command center, while Hamas and medical staff have denied these claims.
On Sunday, the WHO said that when a UN assessment team arrived at the hospital, it found the site had been transformed into a “zone of death”, with a mass grave at the entrance and about 300 patients left inside, along with 25 health workers. “WHO and partners are developing plans for the immediate evacuation of remaining patients, staff and their families,” the organization said. Seeing the suffering of the people of Gaza, he called for an immediate ceasefire.
