According to Panchang, Govardhan Puja is performed on Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartak month. On this day, the Govardhan mountain and the idol of Sri Krishna are made in the courtyard of the house by applying cow dung. Mostly Govardhan Puja is performed on the second day of Diwali, but this year there is confusion regarding the date of Govardhan Puja. Some say that this pooja is to be held on November 13 i.e. the day after Diwali, while others say that it is on the day of Bhaiya Dooj. According to the Panchang, this year the Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha of the month of Kartak will begin on Monday, November 13 at 2:56 PM and end the next day, November 14, Tuesday at 2:36 PM. According to Uday Tithi this year Govardhan Puja will be performed on November 14. The auspicious time for Govardhan Puja is from 5:25 pm to 9:36 pm.

According to mythology, Lord Indra’s arrogance caused the entire village to suffer from storms and rains. Shri Krishna saved the people of Braj by lifting Govardhan mountain on his finger. Since then every year Govardhan Puja started.

Mode of Govardhan Puja

Govardhan mountain and idol of Sri Krishna are made from cow dung to worship Govardhan. Mount Govardhan is decorated with flowers. Incense, lamp, batashe, roli, akshat, khil and annakoot etc. are included in the puja materials. After this, in Govardhan Puja, the story of Mount Govardhan is recited and aarti is performed by circumambulating the Govardhan prepared from cow dung seven times and chanting. Thus the Govardhan Puja is completed.
