In one fell swoop, hundreds of poorly constructed buildings fell to the ground. The area that suffered the most destruction was around Gaziantep in south-central Turkey. The area was also home to thousands of Syrian refugees and many humanitarian aid organizations. The earthquake left 50,783 dead, 297 missing and 1,07,204 injured in 11 affected provinces. More than 1.5 crore people were affected in this incident. More than 27 lakh people have become homeless. A shameful aspect of the tragedy was that the buildings in which most of the deaths occurred were poorly constructed. 113 people were also arrested in this matter.
