Former South African opener Herschel Gibbs has targeted Temba Bavuma, the current captain of the South African Test team. Herschel Gibbs described Temba Bavuma as unfit and overweight. Bavuma limped off the field after being injured while fielding on the first day of the Boxing Day Test against India. Dean Elgar, playing his final Test series before retiring from international cricket, took over the captaincy after Bavuma’s injury in the first season.
The incident took place during the 20th over of the first Test match being played at Centurion, when South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first. Temba Bavuma injured himself after straining his left arm while trying to block a shot from Indian batsman Virat Kohli. In response to a post on ‘X’, Herschel Gibbs hit out at the South African captain, calling him ‘unfit to play and overweight’.

Herschel Gibbs wrote, “Ironically, since he started as Proteas coach in 2009, the coach has allowed some players to play who are clearly unfit and overweight.” The incident forced the immediate withdrawal of Bavuma, who played for South Africa in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup semi-final in India last month. Interestingly, he suffered a right thumb injury during that match.
Bavuma was sent for medical evaluation to assess the severity of the strain after the injury. The injury was revealed during commentary on the day, with Bavuma straining his left hamstring. Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada was the star of the day for South Africa, taking his first five-wicket haul against India. With this, he became the seventh South African bowler to take 500 wickets in international cricket.
