New Delhi. In the World Cup 2023 (India vs New Zealand) match against New Zealand, Team India’s Mohammad Shami took five wickets by giving 54 runs. With his performance at the Dharamshala ground, the right-arm fast bowler not only played a key role in dismissing the Kiwis for 273, who were on their way to a score of 300, but also dismissed Shardul Thakur for 273 runs in the tournament so far. The decision of the team management was also proved wrong. Known as ‘Lala’ among his teammates, Shami won the hearts of fans in his very first match of the World Cup 2023.
Playing in his first match of the World Cup 2023, Shami took the wickets of Kiwi batsmen Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry to become the third bowler to take five wickets in an innings in this World Cup. Before Shami, New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner and Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi achieved this feat. Shami, who dismissed Will Young and Rachin Ravindra in his first two spells, bowled Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry on the fourth and fifth balls of the 48th over. After scoring 260 runs for the loss of 6 wickets due to his ‘double strike’, the Kiwi team, who looked in good shape, reached 260 runs for 8 wickets.

Shami, who took a hat-trick against Afghanistan in World Cup 2019, was unable to take a hat-trick today but he completed his fifth hunt of the match by having century winner Daryl Mitchell (130) caught by Virat Kohli. Shami proved to be India’s most important bowler in this match. Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets while Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj got one wicket each.

With today’s performance, Mohammad Shami became the third highest wicket-taker for India in the World Cup. He has pushed Kumble to number four. Zaheer Khan and Jawagal Srinath are on the first and second positions respectively in this list. Zaheer has taken 44 wickets in 23 innings while Srinath has taken 44 wickets in 33 innings.
