India hopes to agree on a clear framework on climate financing at COP28 in Dubai, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said on Thursday ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dubai. Apart from the World Climate Action Summit, Prime Minister Modi will leave for Dubai today to attend three other high-level events.
Modi will attend the World Climate Action Summit on the sidelines of the United Nations Conference on Climate (CPO28) on Friday. Many world leaders will attend the Climate Action Summit to discuss ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and effectively combat climate change.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to outline India’s ambitious climate agenda and related issues at the summit. The Prime Minister will return to Delhi on Friday night. He will also participate in three other high-level events during his visit.
The World Climate Action Summit is a high-level offshoot of COP28. COP28 is being held from November 30 to December 12 under the chairmanship of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“Our clear vision and priority is that climate finance and climate technology are a very important part of global efforts to address the challenge of environmental degradation,” Kwatra told reporters.
“We hope that a clear roadmap on climate finance will be agreed at COP28 which will be critical to meeting new, collective, quantitative targets,” he said.
‘India is one of the few major economies that is moving towards meeting its Nationally Determined Contribution,’ said Kwatra.
Regarding Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Dubai, Kwatra said it would provide an opportunity to take forward the Prime Minister’s vision to tackle the challenge of climate change and build a global consensus on ‘this very important issue’.
The Conference of Parties-28 (COP28) is a conference where world leaders, policy makers, scientists and activists come together to find solutions to the growing challenges of climate change. It was launched in 2010.
