Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sanjay Verma said during an open debate on ‘Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter through Effective Multilateralism: Maintaining the Peace and Security of Ukraine’ at the UN Security Council on Thursday. The international community should pause for a moment and ask two important questions.
In need of improvement and reconstruction
Verma said, “The first question is, are we close to a possible solution that is acceptable?” He said, “And if not, then why is it that the United Nations system, especially its main body – the United Nations Security Council – has been completely ineffective in resolving the ongoing conflict, when its main responsibility is to maintain international peace and security.” . Verma said that for multilateralism to be effective, old structures need to be reformed and rebuilt. Otherwise their credibility is needed. Deterioration will continue and until we fix this systemic flaw, we will not achieve anything.”

Verma reiterated India’s concern over the current situation in Ukraine and said New Delhi has always advocated that no solution can come at the cost of human lives. Verma underlined Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s view that “this is not a time for war”, but a time for development and cooperation. He said that no one would benefit from increased hostility and violence.
Appealed for an immediate end to hostilities
“We have appealed that all efforts be made for an immediate end to hostilities and an immediate return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy,” Verma said. He stressed that dialogue is the only solution to differences and disputes. No matter how difficult this task is. This may take time. “For the path to peace, we have to keep all avenues of diplomacy open,” he said. Verma said that actions that harm the possibilities of talks and dialogue should be avoided.
The world is being affected by war
India lamented that due to this war the prices of food, fuel and fertilizers are increasing, affecting the entire world and especially the countries of the ‘Global South’ are left to their fate. The term ‘Global South’ refers to developing and underdeveloped countries, mainly located in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The voice of the Global South must be heard
“From our perspective, it is important that their (Global South) voices are heard and their legitimate concerns are addressed,” Verma said. He said India’s presidency of the G20 ensured that some of the economic difficulties of developing countries should be kept in mind. High on the G20 agenda. Verma said India’s approach to the Ukraine conflict would be people-centric and New Delhi was providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine and financial assistance to some of its neighbors in the ‘Global South’ facing economic crisis.
