International aid shipments began arriving in Libya on Saturday, providing a lifeline to thousands despite little hope of finding survivors. Flash floods on Sunday inundated the port city of Derna, submerging thousands of people and homes. In fact, two dams collapsed under the pressure of torrential rains caused by the storm.

A clear death toll in the accident is not available. Eastern Administration Health Minister Othman Abdeljalil said the death toll was 3,166. At the same time, the World Health Organization (WHO) said, “The bodies of 3,958 people have been recovered and identified.” While more than 9 thousand people are still missing. The organization said 29 tonnes of aid had reached the eastern city of Benghazi.
“This is a huge disaster,” said Ahmed Zouten, the WHO’s Libyan representative. Bodies of people swept out to sea by the floods still float ashore. A rescue team from Malta’s Civil Protection Department found the beach littered with bodies on Friday, the Times of Malta newspaper reported.
An AFP correspondent saw two planes carrying aid, one from the United Arab Emirates and the other from Iran, landing in Benghazi, 300 kilometers (190 miles) west of Derna. The Italian embassy said a ship arrived in Derna with two helicopters, bulldozers, tents, blankets and pumps.
Tons of aid has also flowed east from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Also a field hospital in France.
Hatem al-Tawahani, medical director of the Benghazi Medical Center, told AFP that 15 wounded in Derna were now being treated there.
One patient, Eid Kayit Abdel Khalif, was working in Derna when the floods hit. He said 75 people from his hometown of Al-Sharif in Egypt were killed. “We don’t have any information about that,” he said.
