Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spent around Rs 25 crore to buy Mitchell Starc in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction. Mitchell Starc has gone to KKR for Rs 24.75 crore in the IPL 2024 auction. KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir has revealed why the franchise team spent so many crores to buy Mitchell Starc. Not only will Mitchell Starc prove himself, Gambhir himself has rejoined KKR after a long time. Under Gambhir’s captaincy, KKR have become IPL champions twice. In IPL 2022-23, Gambhir was playing the role of mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise team.
Gambhir, who was also part of the KKR think tank at the time of the IPL 2024 auction, said, “There is no doubt that Starc is an ‘X factor’.” A player who can bowl with the new ball, can bowl in the death overs (final overs) and most importantly can also lead the bowling attack. He said, ‘He will also be of great help to our two local bowlers because both our bowlers are very talented and you need someone to help them on the field and Starc will fit into all those roles.’

“He will be important not only for his bowling but also for leading the bowling attack which will help all the other bowlers,” Gambhir said on ‘Jio Cinema’. So someone had to pay the price. Gambhir, who has led KKR to two IPL titles under his captaincy, said that according to him, a strong bowling line-up is more important than a strong batting line-up. The former Indian opener said, ‘We have a lot of depth in our bowling line-up. We always wanted a strong bowling attack and now we have many options with Mujibur Rahman, Gus Atkinson, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakraborty and Mitchell Starc and we also have two Indian pacers Harshit Rana and Suyyash Sharma along with Chetan Sakaria. ‘

He said, ‘Now we have a lot of options in which we can come up with different combinations looking at the stadium. I always prefer a strong bowling line up over a strong batting line up. When asked about returning to the title-winning franchise in 2012 and 2014, Gambhir said, ‘For me, KKR is not a team but a feeling. The reason behind it is that I have received a lot of love from the people of Kolkata for seven years and I hope we can create the same memories we created in 2012 and 2014. There is no guarantee that we will win but we are sure that we will persevere.
