Israeli airstrikes on Gaza camps kill more than 30, US secretary of state faces anger from Arab leaders

New Delhi:
Amid an ongoing war with Hamas, Israel launched an airstrike on a refugee camp in central Gaza late Saturday, killing more than 30 people.

Important information regarding the case:

  1. Attacks between the Israeli army and Hamas continue, but tensions do not appear to be easing. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who is on a diplomatic trip to the Middle East, is facing resentment in meetings with Arab leaders.

  2. Antony Blinken emphasized that the US Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, has ruled out any scope for a ceasefire, supporting a “humanitarian pause” in clashes and bombings to prevent civilian deaths in Gaza.

  3. US President Joe Biden recently said that progress had been made in achieving a “humanitarian pause”, but not an extended one. “The United States believes that all these efforts will help ease humanitarian disruptions,” Antony Blinken told a media conference in Jordan.

  4. Hamas issued a statement late Saturday saying foreigners would not be allowed to leave Gaza until the Israeli army allows wounded Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to cross the Rafah border to Egypt for treatment.

  5. Hamas’s Gaza Health Ministry said Israeli airstrikes have so far killed more than 9,480 Gazans, most of them women and children. Hamas said an Israeli attack on a UN school killed about 12 people while thousands were taking refuge there.

  6. The massive bombing and loss of civilian life in Gaza has sparked worldwide outrage. There are massive demonstrations against Israel. This has also affected Israel’s diplomatic relations around the world. Meanwhile, Turkey recalled its ambassador from Israel on Saturday. Jordan also recalled its ambassador on Wednesday.

  7. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has held Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu personally responsible for the deaths of women and children in Gaza. “Netanyahu is no longer someone we can talk to. We have rejected him,” he said.

  8. Israel’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Harzi Halevi, visited ground forces inside the strip that completely encircles Gaza. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said his forces were “fighting hard” and were “operating in southern and northern Gaza City. Forces have now entered populated areas.”

  9. According to US special envoy David Satterfield, Israel has described Gaza City as “the center of the Hamas terrorist organization”, although 350,000 to 400,000 civilians still live in the city and surrounding areas.

  10. Israel has vowed to root out Hamas in retaliation for the October 7 attack. So far, it has killed about 9,500 people in Gaza. At the same time, 1,400 Israelis were killed in Hamas attacks.
