Virat Kohli was dismissed after scoring 38 runs
New Delhi. Team India’s star batsmen, including former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli, returned to the pavilion cheaply in the first innings of the first Test match against South Africa. Team India lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma, Yashshwi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill on the score of 24 runs. Against South Africa’s pace attack, the Indian batsmen kept returning to the pavilion one after another. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli was looking in great form but he too was bowled by fast bowler Kagiso Rabada and returned leaving the team in the middle. Virat did only one net practice before the Boxing Day Test match. After the first day’s play ended, Team India’s batting coach Vikram Rathore was seen defending Virat. Rathore said that at the stage of Kohli’s career, he does not need much practice.
Virat Kohli also did not participate in the only three-day ‘intra-squad’ practice match played at ‘Tux Oval’ in Pretoria. He had already taken permission for a four-day leave to spend time with his family in England. Kohli looked in good form on Centurion’s bouncy pitch but was caught out by fast bowler Kagiso Rabada. India ended the rain-affected first day at 208 for 8.

‘It doesn’t matter if Virat doesn’t practice’
Vikram Rathore said after the opening day of the two-match series, ‘At the stage Kohli is in his career, I don’t think he needs much practice. He bats often and also practices a lot. It doesn’t matter if he practices less for a few days. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer shared a partnership of 65 runs for the fourth wicket. KL Rahul stands on 70 runs off 105 balls. Team India was in trouble when Virat Kohli came to the crease to bat.
‘Virat didn’t feel like playing Tests after 6 months’
Vikram Rathore said, ‘Even today we saw how well Virat Kohli was batting. His innings did not look like he was playing a Test match after almost six months. A big innings was expected from Virat Kohli in the first innings. But he could not live on it. The Indian team is in trouble this time. The Indian batsmen were seen struggling against the South African bowlers with ease. Young opener Yashshwi Jaiswal was dismissed for 17 runs while Rohit contributed 5 runs. Gill returned to the pavilion after scoring 2 runs. Shreyas Iyer played an innings of 31 runs. Shardul Thakur scored 24 while Ashwin scored 8 runs. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took the most 5 wickets from South Africa. Rabada also completed 500 wickets in his international career during this period.
