Viral Video News: A passenger has shared a video of himself pointing a green laser straight at the plane while flying in Australia. In the 28-second clip shared on social media site Reddit (Reddit.Com) on Wednesday, a ‘green laser light’ is repeatedly aimed at the plane. The caption of the video clip reads, ‘I was traveling last night and saw someone shoot a laser at our flight. I was just wondering if it’s illegal in Australia?’
Yahoo has confirmed that the video was recorded in Melbourne, Australia. Asked about the video, a Victoria Police officer said, ‘Yes, it is a criminal offense to attack an aircraft with a laser.’ He further said that a case can be registered against anyone who intentionally does so. Apart from this, harassment of aircraft and crew members and possession of illegal weapons are also offences. Laser pointers are banned in Victoria.

An Australian government report states that Victoria has “banned a handheld battery-operated device commonly known as a ‘laser pointer'”. Aiming a laser pointer at any aircraft is also illegal in the US, where it is considered a federal crime. The FAA reported 9,457 laser attacks on aircraft in the US in 2022.

On the other hand, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that attacking an aircraft with a laser would make the pilot unable to see and control the aircraft and could endanger the lives of the passengers. Anyone caught flashing a laser pointer could be fined up to $11,000 per violation, the FAA said.
