Liquor allowed in Gift City: Congress and AAP criticize Gujarat government’s decision

Gujarat’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress on Saturday clashed over the decision to allow sale of liquor in Gift City. On Friday, the state government partially modified the strict prohibition policy.

The opposition Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said it was an unfortunate decision that would ruin the youth. At the same time, the BJP said it would provide the right environment for business development in the area.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Amit Chawda said, “This is a very unfortunate decision. The BJP government wants to lift prohibition in the state and has started with Gift City. Tomorrow they will say that they will lift prohibition from here. Statue of Unity (in Kevadia) and tent City. “At the same time, we want to lift the liquor ban in Kutch’s Dhordo and Surat Diamond Bourse to attract tourists.”

“This will ruin the youth. People who come out of Gift City drinking alcohol will cause accidents and may harm our women. Do they (the government) believe that lifting the ban on liquor will attract investment,” he said.

Botad MLA and AAP member Umesh Makwana has written to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel demanding to withdraw the decision to lift liquor ban in GIFT City.

Rejecting the allegations and apprehensions of the opposition, state government minister Rishikesh Patel said that this decision has been taken for the industries that are coming from outside the state.

Patel asserted, “This is a decision to provide traders with the same lifestyle that they are used to in places where liquor is not banned. Many foreign companies located in GIFT City are part of the ‘Fortune-500’. Let the Congress call it what it wants.” But later he will understand the importance of this decision.
