Today we are going to talk about an actor of Hindi cinema whose 98th birthday was celebrated a day ago. Although he was a famous musician of India, he was proficient in many fields including story writing and singing. He spent a lot of time in the tea gardens of West Bengal and Assam.

The name of this musician is Salil Chaudhary. He was born on 19 November 1925 in Gazipur village of West Bengal. His father was a doctor and worked near a tea garden. He used to listen to Bengali and Assamese songs on the radio. Salil spent the whole day in the tea garden and listened to songs on his father’s radio. Salil’s music was very influential.

Salil Chaudhary joined Bharatiya Jan Natya Sangh in 1994. In the meantime, Kaifi Azmi, Shailendra, A. Met legendary actors like K Hangal and Balraj Sahni. This led to his keen interest in Hindi cinema. Through his music and songs, he wrote songs for the freedom movement, which filled the youth with enthusiasm.

After India’s independence, he began composing music for the Bengali film industry in Kolkata. In the year 1949, he made his debut as a music composer with the Bengali film ‘Parivartan’. After this he composed music for the films ‘Barjatri’ and ‘Pasher Bari’. During this time he also wrote a story. The story was based on the life of rickshaw pullers. Hearing this story, Hrishikesh Mukherjee was very impressed and asked Bimal Roy to narrate this story.

Bimal Roy created ‘Do Bigha Zameen’

Bimal Roy heard this story and was impressed by Salil Chaudhary. Based on this story, he made ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ which came out in the year 1953. The film was based on Rabindra Nath Tagore’s novel, but Bimal Roy also portrayed a rickshaw puller in the story. The film proved to be a landmark in the history of Indian cinema. The film starred Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy and Meena Kumari. This took Balraj Sahni’s career to new heights. At the same time, Salil composed music for Bimal in several films including ‘Naukri’, ‘Kabuliwala’, ‘Madhumati’.
