Maharashtra: Seven workers killed in lift collapse of under-construction multi-storey building in Thane

The head of the municipal corporation’s disaster management cell said it was not clear at present how the lift cable was damaged.

At least seven workers were killed and others injured when an elevator of a 40-storey building under construction collapsed in Balkum area of ​​Maharashtra’s Thane on Sunday evening. The officials gave this information. Yasin Tadvi, head of Thane Municipal Corporation’s disaster management cell, said the lift crashed from the 40th floor and fell into P-3 (three levels underground in the parking area). He said that the building in which the incident took place is located on Ghodbunder Road.

He said that the incident took place around 5:30 in the evening. At first sight, the cause of the lift collapse is believed to be a break in one of its supporting cables.

After receiving the information, a team of Regional Disaster Management Cell and Fire Brigade personnel reached the spot and pulled out the workers from the underground parking lot.

“It is not yet clear how the lift cable was damaged,” Tadvi said.

The deceased laborers have been identified as Mahendra Chaupal (32), Rupesh Kumar Das (21), Haroon Sheikh (47), Mithlesh (35) and Karidas (38).

He said that the other person who died could not be identified.
