“Mahatma Gandhi is very important in my life, I get emotional paying tribute to him”: Brazilian President

In his remarks at the closing session of the G20 Presidency, the Brazilian President said, “I want to tell Prime Minister Modi that I personally became very emotional when I went to pay tribute to my beloved Gandhi. Everyone knows about my political career. The great importance of Mahatma Gandhi in India. Because his struggle for non-violence is the ideal that I followed for many decades when I was in the labor movement. That is why I am very moved and emotional. Today we have the opportunity to pay this tribute. Thank you for giving.

“I want to tell you all that Brazil will chair the G20 and we will at least try to do something similar to what our brothers and sisters in India have done,” the Brazilian president said.

Tributes were paid to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva made the statement when he and other world leaders attending the G20 paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on Sunday morning.

Inacio Lula da Silva thanked India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for hosting the G20 summit on Sunday. He set out three priorities under his country’s presidency of the group. The Brazilian president said these include social inclusion and the fight against hunger, the energy transition, sustainable development and the reform of global governance institutions.

‘Building a fair world and a sustainable planet’

“All these priorities are part of the slogan of the Brazilian president, which is ‘building a just world and a sustainable planet’,” Inacio Lula da Silva said at the closing session of the G20 summit in Delhi. “Two task forces will be created, the Global Coalition Against Hunger and Poverty and Global Mobilization Against Climate Change.”

He said, “…Technical groups and preliminary cabinet meetings will be held in many cities of all the five regions of our country. Before that, I will be honored to welcome you to the Rio de Janeiro Summit in November 2024. I thank PM Modi very much and I thank the people of India for their ability to organize this event.”

Proposal to organize digital session in November

PM Modi handed over the chairmanship of the G20 to Brazilian President Inacio Lula da Silva and proposed to hold a digital session in November to review the progress made on decisions taken during India’s chairmanship. Brazil will officially take over the presidency of the G20 group on December 1 this year.

PM Modi said, “India has handed over the hammer to Brazil. We have unwavering confidence that it will lead with dedication, vision and advance global unity and prosperity.” Finally proposed to organize a digital session.

The convention ended with a prayer for peace and harmony in the world.

He said, “I propose that we should organize a digital session of the G20 at the end of November. In that session we can review the issues that were agreed upon during this summit. Our team will share its details with everyone. I hope all of you will participate in it (session).

While announcing the conclusion of the G20 Summit, PM Modi quoted a Sanskrit verse and prayed for peace and harmony across the world.

The next G20 summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024.
